INTERNSHIP PROGRAM
Students enrolled at
U.C. Santa Barbara may earn course credit through the museum's internship
program. Interns may enroll for 1-4 units per quarter, up to a maximum
of 8 units. Each unit represents 30 hours of work, most of which
will be spent at the museum.
All internships consist
of two parts. First, you will work with our director, Dr. Gary Coombs,
to identify a project for your internship. Typically, these projects
involve the museum's collections, exhibits or educational programs.
Past projects have included: helping to organize the museum's library
to conform with the Library of Congress cataloging system, designing
a children's version of our self-guided tour, and participating
in the design of a permanent gateway exhibition for the museum.
Second, you will spend
time as a museum volunteer in one or more "visitor-contact"
positions. This may involve being an engineer or conductor on our
miniature train, sharing the model railroad exhibit with visitors
or serving as "station agent" in Goleta Depot's Freight
Office. All of these positions involve a lot of interaction with
the museum's visitors, as well as learning about local and railroad
history. No experience is necessary; all necessary training is provided.
If you think you might
be interested in a museum internship, please explore this web site
more fully to get additional information about the museum. Then
contact the program coordinator, Dr. Thea Cremers (via e-mail
or by calling her at the museum, 805-964-3540, Wed-Fri., 1 to 4
p.m.) at your earliest convenience (positions are limited and competitive)
to discuss scheduling and answer your questions. She will also set
up an appointment with Dr. Coombs regarding project possibilities.
Finally, you will receive an approval code to sign up for Anthro
190, where the credit will be earned.
