The Southern Pacific Years, 1901-1975

1901

Goleta Depot is built on property owned by pioneer Kellogg family along S.P.'s new Coast Route alignment through the Goleta Valley.

1913 Lima bean warehouse built adjacent to Walnut packing house, sharing spur south of depot.
1917
Electric lights installed in the depot.
1925 Depot chimneys damaged by Great Santa Barbara Earthquake. Chimneys replaced with stovepipe.
1932
Plumbing added to the second-story agent's apartment.
1936
Lemon-packing plant built on La Patera Lane west of depot.
Vegetable-packing shed attached to depot's eastern end in late 30s.
1961
Railway Express Agency office at Goleta Depot closes.
1963
Walnut-grower's association leases depot's Waiting Room for office use.
1965
Last local train (May 20) means end of Southern Pacific passenger service at Goleta.
1966
Goleta Depot almost lost in fire that destroys walnut and lima bean warehouse buildings.
1970
Last resident agent, Al Singleton, retires. Frank Vasquez becomes last agent at Goleta Depot.
1972 Southern Pacific notifies Calif. Public Utilities Commission of plans to close station at Goleta (April).
1973
Goleta Depot is closed and boarded up (October).
Kellogg family heirs file suit to recover Goleta Depot property.
